How W is calculated
A starter needs five innings; otherwise the official scorer awards it to the most effective reliever.
A pitcher can allow one run over eight innings and get nothing, or five runs over five and get the win. Run support and bullpen quality decide this stat more than pitching does.
What counts as a good W?
Half of the 471 qualified MLB players in 2026 were at or below 4. Clearing 10 put a season in the top tenth of the league.
