HLD stands for holds in baseball. Credit to a reliever who enters in a save situation, records at least one out and leaves with the lead intact, without finishing the game.

How HLD is calculated

Counted. A pitcher cannot earn a hold and a save in the same game.

Holds are the setup man’s version of saves. Major League Baseball does not list it as an official statistic, which is why box scores and record books treat it unevenly.

What counts as a good HLD?

Half of the 316 qualified MLB players in 2026 were at or below 6. Clearing 17 put a season in the top tenth of the league.
