How G/F is calculated

G/F = ground balls ÷ fly balls, both counted against the pitcher

Ground balls turn into double plays and almost never leave the park, which is how sinkerballers survive without many strikeouts. By ESPN’s count the median pitcher with 100 innings sat at 0.7 in 2025 and the most extreme ground-ball arms near 2.

What counts as a good G/F?

Half of the 324 qualified MLB players in 2026 were at or below 0.70. Clearing 1.10 put a season in the top tenth of the league.
