Pitches Per Batter Faced P-TBF

P-TBF stands for pitches per batter faced in baseball. How many pitches a pitcher throws to each hitter before the plate appearance ends.

How P-TBF is calculated

P-TBF = pitches thrown ÷ batters faced

Strikeout pitchers run it up — a strikeout takes at least three pitches, a first-pitch groundout one. The median pitcher with 100 innings was at 3.87 in 2025.

What counts as a good P-TBF?

Half of the 324 qualified MLB players in 2026 were at or below 3.90. The best tenth were under 3.70.
