Pitches Per Inning P/I

P/I stands for pitches per inning in baseball. How many pitches a pitcher needs to get three outs.

How P/I is calculated

P/I = pitches thrown ÷ innings pitched

It decides how deep a starter goes: at 15 a start of 100 pitches lasts nearly seven innings, at 18 it ends in the sixth. The median pitcher with 100 innings was at 16.3 in 2025.

What counts as a good P/I?

Half of the 324 qualified MLB players in 2026 were at or below 16.4. The best tenth were under 15.2.
