Earned Runs ER

ER stands for earned runs in baseball. Runs a pitcher allowed that would have scored without an error or a passed ball — the runs charged to him rather than to his fielders.

How ER is calculated

Counted by the official scorer, who replays the inning as if the errors had not happened. ERA = ER × 9 ÷ IP.

Once an error extends an inning, every run after the out that should have ended it is unearned, even if the pitcher then gives up three straight hits. The median pitcher with 100 innings was charged with 67 in 2025.

What counts as a good ER?

Half of the 324 qualified MLB players in 2026 were at or below 39. The tenth with the most were above 76, which is where the number stops being a good sign.
