OBA stands for opponent batting average in baseball. The batting average of all hitters against the pitcher — how often his at-bats against ended in a hit.

How OBA is calculated

OBA = hits allowed ÷ at-bats against

Not to be confused with on-base average: OBA here counts only hits, so a pitcher who walks many batters can post a low figure and still allow plenty of baserunners, which is what WHIP catches.

What counts as a good OBA?

Half of the 137 qualified MLB players in 2026 were at or below .244. The best tenth were under .216.
