SH stands for sacrifice hits in baseball. A bunt that gives up the batter’s out to move a runner up a base — the sacrifice bunt.

How SH is calculated

Counted. Not an at-bat and not a plate appearance in the OBP formula, so it changes neither AVG nor OBP.

The sacrifice bunt has nearly left the game: run-expectancy tables show that trading an out for a base usually lowers a team’s expected runs, and most season leaders now are pitchers’ spots of the past or a handful of speedy hitters.

What counts as a good SH?

Half of the 204 qualified MLB players in 2026 were at or below 2. Clearing 6 put a season in the top tenth of the league.
