Sacrifice FliesSF

SF stands for sacrifice flies in baseball. A fly ball caught for an out that lets a runner tag up and score, with fewer than two outs.

How SF is calculated

Counted. A sacrifice fly is not an at-bat, so it cannot lower a batting average, but it is in the denominator of on-base percentage.

The one way a productive out costs a hitter OBP: OBP = (H + BB + HBP) ÷ (AB + BB + HBP + SF). A bunt that moves a runner (SH) is left out of that denominator entirely.

What counts as a good SF?

Half of the 230 qualified MLB players in 2026 were at or below 3. Clearing 7 put a season in the top tenth of the league.

By position, the median was 4 for 1B, 4 for 2B, 4 for C, 4 for DH, 4 for SS and 3.5 for RF.
