How AVG is calculated
AVG = H ÷ AB

Walks, hit-by-pitches and sacrifices are not at-bats, so they leave the average untouched — the reason a .250 hitter who walks 100 times can be more valuable than a .290 hitter who never does.
What counts as a good AVG?
Half of the 240 qualified MLB players in 2026 were at or below .252. Clearing .282 put a season in the top tenth of the league.
