SECA stands for secondary average in baseball. Bill James’s measure of the bases a hitter gains apart from his batting average: extra bases on hits, walks and steals, per at-bat.

How SECA is calculated

SECA = (TB − H + BB + SB − CS) ÷ AB

It rewards exactly what batting average ignores, so two hitters with the same .260 average can sit 150 points apart here.

What counts as a good SECA?

Half of the 240 qualified MLB players in 2026 were at or below .279. Clearing .369 put a season in the top tenth of the league.

By position, the median was .299 for 1B, .287 for DH, .281 for SS, .277 for C, .275 for LF and .273 for CF.
