Secondary Average SECA

SECA stands for secondary average in baseball. Bill James’s measure of the bases a hitter gains apart from his batting average: extra bases on hits, walks and steals, per at-bat.

How SECA is calculated

SECA = (TB − H + BB + SB − CS) ÷ AB

It rewards exactly what batting average ignores, so two hitters with the same .260 average can sit 150 points apart here.

What counts as a good SECA?

Half of the 250 qualified MLB players in 2026 were at or below .274. Clearing .361 put a season in the top tenth of the league.

By position, the median was .291 for 1B, .283 for DH, .278 for SS, .272 for C, .269 for CF and .265 for LF.
