On-base plus sluggingOPS
OPS stands for on-base plus slugging. One number for a hitter’s whole offensive game: how often he reaches base plus how much damage he does when he connects.
How OPS is calculated
OPS = OBP + SLG
Yordan Alvarez, 2026: .430 + .597 = 1.027
Adding two fractions with different denominators is mathematically sloppy, and on-base is worth roughly 1.8 times as much as slugging in creating runs. OPS survives because it tracks team run scoring almost as well as far more complicated metrics and can be computed in your head.
What counts as a good OPS?
Half of the 240 qualified MLB players in 2026 were at or below .739. Clearing .840 put a season in the top tenth of the league.
