Y/A stands for yards per pass attempt in football. Passing yards divided by pass attempts — how far the ball goes per throw, incompletions included. Other sites write it YPA.

How Y/A is calculated

Y/A = passing yards ÷ ATT

Drake Maye, 2025: 4,394 ÷ 492 = 8.9

Sacks are not attempts, and the yards lost on them come off the team’s passing total, not the passer’s — so Y/A flatters a quarterback who takes a lot of sacks. The league average has sat near 7.0 for two decades.

What counts as a good Y/A?

Half of the 36 qualified NFL players in 2025 were at or below 7.1. Clearing 8.1 put a season in the top tenth of the league.
