Total quarterback ratingQBR
QBR stands for total quarterback rating. ESPN’s rating of everything a quarterback does on a play — passes, sacks, scrambles, designed runs, fumbles and penalties — on a 0–100 scale where 50 is an average starter.
How QBR is calculated
Not fully public: ESPN credits each play with the expected points it added, splits that between the quarterback and his teammates, adjusts for the defense faced and scales the season to 0–100.
Unlike passer rating it counts sacks and runs, and it weighs each play by how much it swung the game, so a 300-yard afternoon in a blowout loss lifts QBR far less than it lifts passer rating. ESPN’s figures go back to 2006.
What counts as a good QBR?
Half of the 33 qualified NFL players in 2025 were at or below 57.9. Clearing 71.0 put a season in the top tenth of the league.
