Shots on Goal SOG
SOG stands for shots on goal in hockey. A shot that would have gone in had the goalie not stopped it: every save plus every goal.
How SOG is calculated
SOG = goals + shots saved. A shot that misses the net, rings off the post or is blocked is not one.
Shooting percentage is goals ÷ shots on goal, so this is the number it rests on. ESPN’s own player tables head a different column SOG — shootout goals — so this site files shots under S.
What counts as a good SOG?
Half of the 682 qualified NHL players in 2025-26 were at or below 91.5. Clearing 186.9 put a season in the top tenth of the league.
