FLAG stands for flagrant fouls in basketball. Contact the officials judge unnecessary (Flagrant 1) or unnecessary and excessive (Flagrant 2).

How FLAG is calculated

Counted. Two free throws and possession for the fouled team; a Flagrant 2 also ejects the player.

Flagrant fouls add up in points, one for a Flagrant 1 and two for a Flagrant 2, and a player reaching five in a regular season is suspended.

What counts as a good FLAG?

Half of the 113 qualified NBA players in 2025-26 were at or below 1. The tenth with the most were above 3, which is where the number stops being a good sign.
