What is the difference between targets and receptions in football?

A target is a pass thrown in a receiver’s direction; a reception is one he caught. The gap between them is partly the receiver’s hands and partly the throw — a ball broken up or badly overthrown still counts as a target. Catch rate is receptions over targets, and it rises the shorter the routes are, which is why tight ends and backs out of the backfield catch a far higher share of what comes their way than a deep threat does.
