What is the difference between on-base percentage and slugging?
On-base percentage is how often a batter reaches; slugging is how far he gets when he does. OBP treats a single and a home run alike, one time on base each. Slugging counts total bases per at-bat, so the home run is worth four singles and a walk is worth nothing at all. OPS adds them, which is why a leaderboard sorted by OPS mixes the man who never makes an out with the man who hits the ball out of the park.
