What is the difference between field goal percentage and true shooting?

Field goal percentage counts made shots over attempts and treats a three-pointer exactly like a layup, while ignoring free throws entirely. True shooting divides points by the shots and free throws it took to score them, so a 40% three-point shooter and a 60% finisher at the rim are compared on what they actually put on the scoreboard. That is why a guard who lives at the arc and the line can shoot 44% from the field and still rank among the most efficient scorers in the league.
