Offensive WAROWAR

OWAR stands for offensive war in baseball. The batting and baserunning half of wins above replacement, with fielding left out.

How OWAR is calculated

The offensive component of WAR, in wins over a freely available replacement player.

The gap between a player’s WAR and his OWAR is what his glove was worth: a designated hitter’s two numbers are nearly the same, a shortstop’s are not.

What counts as a good OWAR?

Half of the 240 qualified MLB players in 2026 were at or below 2.0. Clearing 3.9 put a season in the top tenth of the league.

Leader: 8.0

By position, the median was 2.5 for SS, 2.4 for CF, 2.1 for 3B, 2.0 for C, 1.9 for 1B and 1.8 for RF.
