How NFL playoff seeding works
- Seven clubs from each conference make the playoffs: the four division winners and three wild cards.
- The division winners take seeds 1 to 4 by record, whatever the wild cards' records; the wild cards are seeds 5 to 7.
- Seed 1 has a bye. In the wild-card round 2 hosts 7, 3 hosts 6 and 4 hosts 5; seed 1 then hosts the lowest seed left.
- Ties go to the rulebook, division ties first. Every NFL tiebreaker step, with today's ties.
Questions
How does the playoff predictor break ties?
With the NFL's own steps. Clubs tied in a division go by head-to-head, division record, common games, conference record, strength of victory and strength of schedule. Wild-card ties first keep only the best club of each division, then go by head-to-head (a sweep, with three or more clubs), conference record, common games (four or more) and the same strengths. When one club drops out of a tie of three, the other two start over at step one. Each tie the board breaks is listed under the seeds with the step that settled it.
Does a tie count?
Yes: a tie counts as half a win and half a loss, as the league counts it. Tap Tie under a game to pick one.
What about point differential?
Only the last steps of the tiebreakers use points, and the predictor gives them the real points of games already played; picked games have no score. Two clubs still level after all of that are ordered by the coin toss, and the board says so.
Can I share my season?
Copy a link to this season: the link carries every pick, and whoever opens it sees the same seeds. The picks also stay in this browser.
When does it update?
Finals load as games end, and the page checks for them every hour. A game already played cannot be picked.
